Matuku Takotako: Sumner Centre is a purpose-built community hub that restored an important civic heart to Sumner following the Canterbury earthquakes. Located on the site of the former library, the two-storey facility brings together a public library, community meeting spaces, museum and multi-purpose hall, creating a welcoming destination for learning, connection and community events.
Designed to reflect its coastal setting, the building incorporates natural timber cladding, coloured precast concrete panels and salvaged heritage elements from the former community centre and museum. Despite the logistical challenges of constructing on a constrained site within a busy township, Armitage Williams successfully delivered the project through careful planning and coordination. Recognised with a Gold Award at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, Matuku Takotako stands as a lasting community asset that celebrates Sumner's history while supporting its future.
